Into the Fray: Apple Pay Enters China
The economy may be wheezing and the stockmarket wobbling, but Chinese consumers are still eager for Apples pricey gizmos. Last year, sales in greater China (ie, plus Hong Kong and Taiwan) shot up by 84%, to $59 billion; only in America does Apple rake in more.
Now the Californian pany is giving Chinese customers a fresh reason to upgrade. It is offering them Apple Pay, a payment system that works only on its newer devices, launched in China today in partnership with China UnionPay, a state-owned firm that until recently held a monopoly on domestic payment-processing. Apple Pay hopes China will bee its biggest market.
Not easy: Alibaba and Tencent, local internet giants, already boast robust mobile payment-systems used by hundreds of millions. And recently UnionPay launched its own service, in cahoots with big state banks. Apple Pay has today beaten Samsungs version into China—but its still late to the party.
